Fall is on the way, although you may not notice it because of the above seasonal temps. Before the temperature starts to get cooler, the leaves start to fall, and it's crucial to get your home ready for the fall and, eventually, the winter season.
Here is a list of a few things to keep in mind when preparing your property for the fall season:
• Clean, Repair, and Secure Eavestroughs and Downspouts: Having your eavestroughs clear of debris is one thing you should do to protect your roof and foundation from water and ice damage. Make sure leaves are removed and ensure your downspout is at an adequate distance away from your property. (At least three to four feet away from your home's foundation)
• Repair Exterior Caulking Before Winter: Cracked caulking can cause damage to your windows and sills. This can be a source of water getting into your home. Repairing exterior caulking will make your home less drafty and more comfortable while protecting your windows.
• Make Your Home Energy Efficient: Add insulation, seal furnace ducts, and caulking around windows/doors to keep the heat in and cold out.
•Inspect Your Roof: Your roof is a crucial part of your home. Damaged shingles can cause a water leak in your home. If shingles have any curling, buckling, or crackling, they should be replaced sooner rather than later.
• Prevent Bursting Pipes: Turn off the valves to the exterior hose. Run the water until the pipes are empty and ensure all the water is drained. If it is not, the water can freeze up and damage pipes. This is more for the winter season, but getting to it in the fall before temps plumit is ideal.
